For the revamp of Khoj Studios, one of the few experimental art spaces in the country, its director Pooja Sood had to depend on art donations by artists. But Sood concedes that to sustain the gamut of activities at Khoj, she can’t bank for long on the generosity of the art fraternity and it’s time that the corporate sector in India woke up to the need of the hour – to provide the big bucks to support the immense art resource of India. “Corporate houses need to support organisations that are below the radar but are doing substantial work at the grassroots level,” says Sood, “it’s a shame that non-profit making bodies that support contemporary art practices have either to self-sustain or depend on international funding. We can no longer underestimate the importance of contemporary art otherwise all we will be left talking about is heritage and no real legacy for the future.”
